Advancement of Science and Technology in Schools

About Us

Magellan Science is non-profit that supports programs to advance science and technology in elementary, middle, and high school systems.  Our current focus is with several public, charter and private schools in Wake County, North Carolina.  We hope to expand our focus to the greater Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina in future years.

Magellan Science was founded by Alfred G. Childers, Ph.D. and his son Chris Childers.  Dr. Childers was one of the founders of Magellan Laboratories, a pharmaceutical contract services company.   His love of science led him to join forces with Eric Sherk, an engineer at IBM, when Eric introduced the idea of bringing the F.I.R.S.T LEGO League program to The Magellan Charter School.  Chris Childers was the captain of the original FLL at Magellan Charter School and leading his team multiple awards including two 1st place Champion Awards, 1st and 2nd place Perforamnce Awards, and Robotic Desgin Awards.  They even went on the international level competition wining the Gracious Professionalism award.  Chris' love of science and his desire to give back lead him to become a team mentor and later a co-founder of Magellan Science with Dr. Childers and Mr Sherk.  They now serve on the founding board to guide the vision, mission and growth of Magellan Science.  To date, much of the focus of Magellan Science is at The Magellan Charter School which was founded by Marybeth Childers and George Coccarelli and at the Resurrection Lutheran School where Marybeth Childers served on the founding team.

Magellan Science is currently looking for volunteers to help with its growth.  If you are interested in helping by providing book keeping, legal, instruction services, please contact us and help provide a wonderful scientific experience to children.

Active Initiatives:

Magellan NXT Robotic education - In 2007, Alfred G. Childers, Ph.D. initiated an NXT training program to prepare students for FLL participation.  In 2008, Chris Childers and Alfred G. Childers, Ph.D. began offering summer courses for both beginner, intermediate and advanced students.  Future training courses are underway.

  • Summer Beginner Course at Magellan Charter School
  • Summer Intermediate Course at Magellan Charter School
  • Summer Advance Course at Magellan Charter School
  • Summer Beginner Course at Resurrection Lutheran School

Magellan NXT Robotic - In 2004, Eric Sherk founded the robotic program at The Magellan Charter School that participated in the F.I.R.S.T. Lego League (FLL).  Al Childers join Eric and coached the first teams at The Magellan Charter School.  Their teams have gone on to consistently win awards at state and international FLL competitions.  Their teams understand that it is not all about wining, but more about participating, learning, and giving back.  Their teams have hosted home school teams to mini-competitions, shared their knowledge with other teams such as the Microbots that have also go on to win at state competitions, and have invited other team members to their training courses.

The FLL program is a friendly competitive team based challenge that incorporates the concept of gracious professionalism.  Teams of  4-10 children work together to design, build and program a single autonomous robot that can earn point by completing predefined tasks in two and a half minutes.  In addition to the robotic performance, the children are judged on technical knowledge, team work, and a research project.
