Advancement of Science and Technology in Schools

Alfred G. Childers, Ph.D. - Founder, Administrator, Advisor, Coach and Instructor


Dr. Childers worked in the pharmaceutical industry and more recently has dedicated himself to serving the science education of students in North Carolina.  He has served in an advisory capacity to science museums and state wide science expos.  He also served on the board of NC-F.I.R.S.T.  In 2004, he co-founded to bring afterschool science activities to more students. provides robotic education training students for participation of F.I.R.S.T. Robotics.  Over his 14 years as a leader and a team coach at, his teams have gone onto international level FLL competitions.  He has since retired from, but continues his dedication in an advisory capacity.  

Eric Sherk - Founder, Advisor, Coach and Instructor

Eric Sherk is a senior engineer at IBM where he verifies complex circuits, including the chips used in Microsoft's Xbox360, Sony's PlayStation 3, and Nintendo's Wii gaming platforms.  He founded Magellan Charter School's involvement in FIRST LEGO League and continues to serve there as a coach and mentor.  In association with IBM and NC State University, he coached the first high school team from North Carolina to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition.  That team won several regional awards and ultimately won the National Championship in its fifth year.  Alumni have gone on to pursue degrees in science and math and several have formed a team that has twice been an invited finalist in DARPA's $1,000,000 urban challenge.  He has also been involved in several other programs aimed at exciting students to pursue careers in science in technology including:  Invention Convention, Odyssey of the Mind, and IBM's Super Summer Science program.

Dylan Childers - Advanced Instructor, Mentor, and Curriculum Developer


Dylan Childers is the co-developer and head of the Magellan Science Summer Robotic Training.  He developed the newest and most advanced curriculum and has taught beginner to the most advanced FLL students and classes.   Dylan has mentored several FLL robotic teams that have been awarded First Place Performance, First Place Robotic Design, First Place Programming, and First Place Robotic Design.  Prior to his mentoring, he participated on and lead the FLL Magellan Mariners - Wharf Rats robotic team which advanced to NC State, US Open and World Tournaments.  His team has earned many awards including the First Place Champion's Award, First Place Performance, and  First Place Robotic Design Award.  

Chris Childers - Advanced Instructor, Mentor, and Curriculum Developer


Chris Childers is the founder of the Magellan Science Summer Robotic Training.  He developed the curriculum and has taught beginner, intermediate and advance robotic courses.  Chris has mentored several FLL robotic teams that have been awarded First Place Performance, First Place Robotic Design, First Place Programming.  Prior to his mentoring, he participated on the FLL Magellan Mariners robotic team.  During his several years of FLL experience, his team was awarded the Champion's Award (2x), First Place Performance (2x), and Second Place Performance, Gracious Professionalism Award and has participated at the FLL International Festival.  Chris has shared his experience with students of Magellan Charter School, Resurrection Lutheran School and students from several wake county schools and home school students.  His team has been acknowledged for the support and encouragement of new FLL teams.

Marybeth Childers - Former Curriculum Advisor and Curriculum Development


Marybeth Childers is the co-founder of Magellan Charter School.  She also served on the startup committee for Resurrection Lutheran School and served as its interim director.  Marybeth has also served as a classroom teacher for Magellan Charter School and Resurrection Lutheran along with several other public schools.  She was selected as The Teacher Of The Year in 1994.

George Coccarelli - Former Advisor and Instructor


George Coccarelli is the co-founder of Magellan Charter School.  He currently serves as a science teacher at The Magellan Charter School bringing hands-on science to classroom students.  Prior to Magellan, he was a manager at General Electric serving in the GE management program.
